England, like Ireland, has an extensive network of excellent country
roads and lanes that carry little traffic and are ideal for bike
touring routes.
The West Country has been chosen for the Iron Donkey’s English
tours because it has all the ingredients that mark out England as
a unique and very special destination.
The Severn Vale, the Cotswold Plateau, the Vale of Pewsey, the Marlborough
Downs, the Somerset Levels and the Wylye Valley are just some of
the scenic treasures to be found within the region.
In addition to the beauty of the natural landscape, there is an
abundance of picture postcard villages and hamlets, ancient towns
and cities like Bath and Glastonbury, magnificent cathedrals such
as those at Wells and Gloucester, ancient heritage sites like Stonehenge
and Avebury, stately homes such as Longleat …..the list is
endless. The main problem with designing bicycle tours here is in
deciding what to leave out!
